Headshot
Starring Chris Brinkhof and Katinka de Vries

We wanted to ask this question:  “Can a sex scene be hot, even if you can’t see the sex?”

The answer, we think, is a resounding “yes”. Originally inspired by the 1963 Andy Warhol film “Blowjob,” the documentary “Headshot” portrays an intense, shared sexual encounter in which we see only one participant, a leather-jacketed (and, in our version, eventually naked) young man. (First-time actor Chris Brinkhof).

As in Warhol’s film, we never see the face of the person giving the blowjob (first-time actress Katinka de Vries).  But in our version we follow the experience from beginning to end:  From Chris waiting for Katinka to arrive, to their very first conversation, their full sexual experience together, and their conversation afterward.

The result is a surprisingly intimate portrait of sex, accomplished without any explicit imagery. Don’t be fooled into thinking it’s R-rated, though – this unrated film is far too arousing to be shown at your local Cineplex.

While we think that female viewers are plenty interested in seeing explicit sexuality in the right context, “Headshot” just goes to show that ‘hot’ films come from an attitude towards sex, not from checking off a list of body parts to be displayed.

A good film for the first-time porn/erotica viewer.

Matinée

Our main current project is “Matinée,” a 35-40 minute erotic short. “Matinée” was shot in Amsterdam, and is currently in postproduction. Blue Artichoke Films will be premièring this short, explicitly erotic English-language film in May 2008.

We are still actively seeking certain crew members for post-production work, particularly in Amsterdam; please see the Cast  and Crew section to apply.

Synopsis

This story involves themes of ambition, insecurity, and the delicate balance of trust between colleagues who work on a creative project together. Stylistic influences include the erotic mainstream films High Art and Lucía Y El Sexo. The plot:

Theater actors Daniel and Mariah are about to act out the romantic scene that they have been performing for weeks, in a play that lacks spark. Mariah is a talented theater actress, but not completely confident in her skills. Her co-star Daniel, a famous soap opera actor, seems savvy and daring. Although they like and respect one another, something just isn’t clicking.

When a routine afternoon matinée performance suddenly becomes very important to both of their careers, the stakes are high and their professional relationship is on the line. Daniel wants to make big changes, and Mariah starts to wonder: Are Daniel’s suggestions reasonable? Has he lost track of the boundary between actor and character? Or is he right that making true art isn’t so black-and-white? Mariah must decide what is right for her.

The Director of Photography for “Matinée” is Bart Beekman, Dutch cinematographer known for his camerawork in music videos and short films. The roles of Mariah and Daniel are played by Alicia Whitsover and Steven McAlistair. Supporting roles are played by Thomas Lundy, Nicole Mischler, Sarah Taylor and Teri Vakaki, among others.

For the post-production of “Matinée” we are still actively seeking the following crew members:

   •       Publicity
   •       Marketing

The style, tone, and intentions of “Matinée” are described in our Artistic Vision document. Interested postproduction crew members are encouraged to read this Artistic Vision.

If you would like to order a copy of “Matinée” when it is released, please e-mail us at info@blueartichokefilms.com and we’ll let you know where and when you can buy a copy.
